Bee Pollen

The bee pollen is the food that the bee deposits in the hive which it collects in its wanderings in the flowered meadows and in the virgin forests of the Greek countryside. Each foraging bee approaches the flowers and harvests the pollen and nectar which they surround with a special secretion of its salivary glands turning them into a durable ball. She carries these balls with her hind legs to the hive and places them in empty cells, stacking them masterfully with her head. There are kept as food supplies for the workers and the larvae (bee bread) to turn them into their basic secretion products: honey, royal jelly and propolis.

Bee pollen combines the nutrients of pollen and nectar with the enzymes secreted by the bee to ferment and upgrade the yeasts and beneficial bacteria (eg Bifidus lactobacilli) that coexist in their environment. The end result is never the same due to the variety of plants that the bees visit at each of their outings, as well as the season and the prevailing climatic conditions. In general, the content of beeswax is mainly carbohydrates (40-60%, mainly sugars, fructose, glucose), proteins (about 35%, range 20-60%), low fat (about 5% with a range of 1-32% ), moisture (4-10%), and other very interesting ingredients (5-15%, vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, carotenoids, glutathione, quercetin, etc). Beeswax therefore, in addition to its nutritional value, according to botanists, has many potential benefits for human health and well-being.

Benefits are reported in the scientific literature after studies in experimental animals, which have to do with the antioxidant capacity of beeswax, ie the ability to bind free radicals that oxidize cellular components, with a positive effect on chronic inflammation and other localized inflammatory reactions. They also mention possible positive effects on the proper management of cholesterol, liver function, antimicrobial activity, healing action, improvement of metabolic activity (especially in relation to the absorption and assimilation of iron and calcium), positive effect on longevity and others. A study in middle-aged women also showed benefits in postmenopausal disorders such as hot flashes, erythema, mood swings, activity, joint pain.
